I know most of my PC’s have always had USB ports and I’ve always plugged things into them. But soon I need to buy a new Laptop because my current Laptop is too old. I was looking at them a few months ago and I was disappointment to learn Laptops no longer come with Optical drives in the machine. I know I can buy one, but I’ve been told that today USB data sticks are used instead of discs. I wanted to buy a couple of USB flash drives online but I’m confused.
So far I’ve learned that there are several kinds of Data sticks, 2.0, 3.0. old generation and new generation Data sticks. I assume the USB ports on my current PC must also have a kind. Additionally I noticed new PC’s have several kinds of USB ports, but they are called type B or type C.
1. Does type B & C mean the same thing as 2.0 & 3.0, or old & new generation? If not, what does it mean? Most new PC’s have at least one type B port and one type C port, why?
My current PC is about 9 yrs old so it probably has the oldest USB ports there are. They work fine, I have 4 of them.
Right now I want to buy a small (4-12 GB) flash drive and I have a few questions. If it’s called a 3.0 flash drive will I be able to record on it with a 2.0 port? I’m assuming my current Laptop has 2.0 ports.I want to transfer about 50 GB of data to the new Laptop when I get it. I was told we use USB drives for this now. Okay. But what kind of data stick should I buy? I’m very confused. I know 3.0 is faster than 2.0 but can a 3.0 stick be used in a 2.0 port? Further, can a 2.0 stick be used in a 3.0 port?
Someone please teach me about this stuff?
